Dixon Lawn-Painting Business Expanding To Bay Area, Los Angeles In Drought

DIXON (CBS13) — A lot has changed for a Dixon-based startup since CBS13 spoke to them during the May launch of their business to paint brown lawns green.

Jason Yang put his East Sacramento home on the market. To help its curb appeal, he's opting for a hue overhaul instead of a drought-tolerant yard.

"I needed to get people to try and look at it again to sell it and I just needed to remind people what this house could be," he said. "That would cost a lot more just to have everything dug up and have rocks put in and to be perfectly honest, it's not going to be like this forever."

That's where Brown Lawn Green comes in.

"It seems absurd," said owner Bill Schaffer. "It seems crazy that we're actually coloring lawns."

The lawn-salon service isn't just popular in the Sacramento area. Demand is so high across the state, the company is now expanding to the Bay Area and Los Angeles starting on Aug. 1.

"We have a huge waiting list in L.A. so our second van is about a week from being done, from being built," he said. "We are looking at another van in the Bay Area to keep up with the work."

But if the idea of painting your lawn doesn't sit well, Schaffer explains it's more like a pet- and kid-friendly hair dye made up of water, oil and stone pigment.

"Paint is a chemical. This is not paint. This is 100 percent all-natural, all organic colorant," he said.

With a price point of 30 cents per square foot, Yang say it's a small price to pay for securing a sale.

"As long as they know I'm not sitting here watering my lawn every night, clandestinely, I think they'll be okay with it," he said.

The colorant lasts two to three months depending on how often you water and mow your yard. The business isn't seasonal—he has services that help customers keep their lawns healthy through the fall and winter months as well.
