Police: Fiber Line Cut Causes 911 Outage For Parts Of Stanislaus, San Joaquin Couties

CERES (CBS13) – People in parts of Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties are unable to call 911 on their cell phones due to a fiber optic line being cut.

According to the Ceres Police Department, Verizon Wireless customers are unable to reach 911 on their cell phones. The problem seems to be affecting all of Stanislaus County, police say.

It appears the problem began sometime Tuesday night.

Ceres Police later announced Wednesday morning that a damaged fiber optic line in Sacramento looks to be the cause of the 911 problems. It is unclear how the line was damaged.

Verizon Wireless has released a statement saying that their network is experiencing problems "due to another carrier's landline fiber cut." The areas affected include parts of Tracy, Vernalis, Waterford, Mountain House and Villa de Lago.

AT&T also released a statement, saying that they are investigating vandalism in the Stockton area that has interrupted services to some customers.
