UC Davis Aggie Surplus Offers Big Deals, Green Way To Do Business

DAVIS (CBS13) — The state of California auctions off surplus items every few months, but maybe you didn't know UC Davis sells surplus stuff all the time.

Whether you love shopping or hate shopping, you're bound to find something interesting in the Aggie Surplus on the UC Davis campus.

"All the stuff here comes from campus departments. so it's stuff they can't use or no longer have a need for," said coordinator Michelle Belden.

The store is open to the public five days a week. Items range from chemistry glassware to bowling balls to a leftover stainless steel tank from the food science department.

"Asking price is $400 but we're accepting offers," she said.

Office furniture is always in supply, but things like the $350 iMacs are bound to go fast.

Only UC Davis staffers can buy items for use within their departments for the first two weeks the item is on sale. After that, it's open to the public.

"If it stays on inventory for 28 days or more, people can make an offer less than the asking price and we can consult the selling department and see if they want to negotiate," she said.

Belden says the store helps UC Davis departments recoup some money spent on the items, and it's a green way to do business.

"We divert about 8,000 items from the landfill every year, and that really helps support the university's commitment to sustainability," she said.
