Police: Man Tried To Light Pipe Bomb While Being Chased By Stockton Officers

STOCKTON (CBS13) – Police say a man tried to light a pipe bomb as he was trying to get away from officers Friday morning.

The scene is near the intersection of Yarmouth and West Creek drives.

Police say they were responding to a burglary around 6 a.m. on Monticello Court when they saw a man riding off on a bicycle. The man allegedly tried to light something on fire as he was getting away, a device police have identified as a pipe bomb.

Officers tazed him as he was lighting the device. The man also dropped two CO2 canisters filled with gunpowder, police say.

The bomb squad safely detonated the device later Friday morning and have arrested the man. He is has been identified as Cliff Narvas, a known transient from Stockton.

Narvas is facing burglary and attempting murder of officers charges. Police say Narvas tried to light the pipe bomb because he "didn't want to go back to jail."
