Victim's Family Rips Former Cal Fire Chief During Murder Sentencing

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A former Cal Fire battalion chief was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison for the stabbing and strangling of his fiancee.

The family of Sarah Douglas finally got its chance to address Orville Fleming, a former first responder turned murderer.

TIMELINE: The Search, Investigation, And Conviction Of Orville Fleming

"I hope you you see Sarah's face, the rest of your life until you die," her mother Trudy Werly said. "The animal you are, you hunted her down until you took the life out of her, you, Moe, ran for your own life, and left my baby dead for her own sister to find her."

A total of four family members spoke out before Fleming's sentence was handed down for the second-degree murder of his fiancee last year.

The veteran first responder remained stoic and unemotional, refusing to turn and face the family.

"My sister, who was my best friend, my sidekick, my little go to, was brutally stripped of her life," Stephanie Douglas said.

Judge Sharon Lueras also remarked on the brutality of the crime and the broken oath Fleming took to protect the public.

"You betrayed the loyalty and trust of your former Cal Fire colleagues and you betrayed the community you swore to protect," she said. "You have no remorse for what you did to her. None."

Werly said after court that despite hoping for life without parole, Fleming's sentence was good enough and the family can start to move on.

Fleming's attorney refused to comment after the hearing.
