New Homes And Light Rail To Be Built In South Sacramento

A new housing complex and light rail station are being built in South Sacramento across from Consumnes River College.

The builder, U.S.A. Properties in Roseville, has been eyeing the plot of land since 2005. They said now that the light rail is closer to completion, having an apartment complex built was a no brainer.

"It's going to be a great opportunity for our residents to walk to the light rail," said Art May from U.S.A Properties.

Residents are excited for the $50 million, 270-unit apartment complex, adding that the light rail is an added bonus.

"If they work downtown it'll be easier for them to get back and forth, cut down on traffic," said South Sacramento resident Anita Miller.

Although this area of South Sacramento is surrounded by low-income housing tenants, the company is targeting a different group. U.S.A. Properties says rent for a one-bedroom apartment will start at more than $1,200 a month.

"We do see young professionals coming into our communities that are working downtown, but yet can't afford the downtown rents," said Mays.

Construction will be complete by late next year.
