Broken Lindhurst High School Air Conditioners Likely Won't Be Fully Online Until Spring

YUBA COUNTY (CBS13) — The heat wave is having a huge impact on Lindhurst High School in Yuba County, where some of the school's air conditioners are broken and classes had to be canceled due to triple-digit temperatures.

"You're restless, and you're trying focusing, and you're stressed out and it's just like you can't wait to get out of there," said freshman Jamie Fry.

Students and staff in about a dozen classrooms are affected, including history teacher Matthias Barrett's room.

"My room got to about 93 degrees," he said. "You tell me how I'm supposed to teach a class like that when kids are sweating completely glistening with sweat; it's very bad."

Parents say it's an unacceptable learning environment.

The school has brought in portable fans and coolers, along with bottled water to keep kids hydrated.

"It's trying to make the best of the situation we have," said Principal Bob Eckardt.

But the district says it's no easy fix. Replacing the campus' antiquated central cooling plant could cost $5 million.

"It's been in the process of being fixed; it's just you fix one thing and then something else fails," he said.

The district is hoping to fix the air conditioners in phases, and they may not be completely back online until next spring.

"It's a real problem, and in the meantime the people who suffer are the children," Barrett said.
