Explosives Found At Roseville Middle School

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — Roseville Police are searching for whoever is responsible for leaving two dangerous homemade explosive devices on the campus of Eich Middle School on Friday.

Police and a bomb squad were able to clear the school before students arrived. Officers say one of the devices actually detonated when a custodian found it early in the morning.

Two police officers were parked out front guarding the Roseville school after the discovery of the homemade explosives.

Investigators say the first device was located by the custodian in the front of campus around 6:30 a.m. He tossed it in his golf cart, possibly thinking it was litter and tossed it in his golf cart. Then he stumbled on a second device.

The first device he found went off, but fortunately the he was far enough away that he wasn't injured. He called police, who rendered the second device safe.

Superintendent Derk Garcia says there have been no recent threats to the campus. The school notified parents on Friday morning.

"It's absolutely not a joke to us," he said. "It's about safety, for someone to put that where our children go to learn. School should be the safest place parents send their children to."
