Cosumnes River College, Blue Light Rail Extension Opened With Celebration

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Regional transit officials are celebrating the opening of the new light rail station in South Sacramento.

The Blue Light Extension which started running at five Monday morning runs from South Sacramento to Cosumnes River College.

"I really like it. It's less bus catching that I have to do now that it's just like one way," said Daisha Murray a Regional Transit rider.

Earlier this year, some Elk Grove riders expressed concern that the new light-rail station would eliminate bus service directly from Elk Grove to Downtown Sacramento. Forcing riders to take light rail with no guaranteed safety.

Some complain about trains filled with crime, trash, and graffiti but are relieved to know the bus service will continue.

Regional Transit Police Department are reaching out to Elk Grove riders hoping to ease those fears. Officers say they have added more security and the trains are cleaner.

"I think as people ride they'll see it's not what they thought it was and if there are small incidents we'll connect with them and deal with those incidents to remedy them," said Norm Leong, Regional Transit Police Department.

The celebration will continue Monday evening as riders experience live entertainment, food trucks, and kid's activities at the Cosumnes River College light rail station.
