What Should The Sharks New Goal Song Be?
The San Jose Sharks have been known to have one of the loudest venues in the NHL at the SAP Center and with each Sharks goal, fans would sing along to the good ole "Rock and Roll, Part 2" by Gary Glitter, punching the air above their head when the song exclaimed "Hey!" The song wouldn't just cheer everyone up, it would get you absolutely pumped.
Unfortunately, Mr. Glitter ran into some trouble with the law and the Sharks want to remove themselves from the man's name. Here's a statement from the San Jose Sharks in an email sent to season ticket holders last week:
"Each offseason, we review all aspects of our organization's operation to ensure we are providing the fans the best in-game experience possible at SAP Center at San Jose. As we approach the start of our 25th anniversary season in 2015-16, we have some important news that we wanted you, as a season ticket holder, to hear first.
We are changing the team's traditional goal song, which has historically been "Rock and Roll, Part 2" by Gary Glitter. As you may be aware, earlier this year, Mr. Glitter was convicted of several horrific sexual abuse crimes which involved minors. He is serving a sixteen year prison sentence in the United Kingdom."
You can't blame them for removing the song from their game celebrations, but it will still be a bummer not to hear the song after a goal. The Sharks changed the song once before in 2005-06 to "Holiday" by Greed Day, but changed it back to Glitter's song the following year.
The Sharks have a bunch of options for a replacement, but I recommend tying it back to the town the games are hosted in: San Jose.
San Jose is a big city with lots of history. It's in the thick of the Silicon Valley - one of the most thriving areas in the world in terms of tech and manufacturing. It's also the home of a few rock bands who could provide the tunes the Sharks are looking for.
The first option is San Jose's own, the Doobie Brothers. The group was formed early in the 1970's out of San Jose, later joined by Michael McDonald in 1976 as the front man. No, their music isn't edgy or hardcore, nor does it have that "pump up" the old goal song had, but it's a favorite band by a lot of people in the South Bay.
My recommendation: "What a Fool Believes"
I know I'm in the minority here, but give it a chance. If you want another San Jose band, look no further than Smash Mouth. I would obviously say "All-Star" is an obvious choice, but seeing as the Sharks had one all-star last year (Brent Burns), let's not get carried away.
"Walkin' on the Sun" by Smash Mouth (because All-Star is already overplayed)
The 90's make sense for the Sharks. They celebrate their 25th year as an NHL franchise, founded in 1991 - they are the 90's kid of the NHL. Of course, if you aren't in the mood for Smash Mouth, there's always the song about San Jose.
"Do you know the way to San Jose" by Dionne Warwick
It would be hilarious if the Sharks picked this gem. Most teams pick the edgiest song they can play without scaring anyone (ie Nickleback, Green Day, Creed), but what about the most mellow song to come out of the 60's? I can dig it.
