Sacramento City College Shooting Victim Talks To CBS13 From Behind Bars

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - One of the victims in the Sacramento City College shooting that left one man dead is now in jail in connection with the crime.

Rico Ridgeway was grazed by a bullet in the shooting that took the life of Roman Gonzales Thursday. He was processed in the Sacramento County Jail Friday on the charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

We went to the jail, where Ridgeway was emotional as he spoke with us.

He spoke to us after he was processed Friday and says he's still in pain from the bullet, which grazed his stomach. He says he's mostly suffering from the loss of his cousin, Roman Gonzalez.

Both Ridgeway and Gonzales have criminal records, but Ridgeway says they wanted to do good together, go to college, study music - and, in his words, "make something out of nothing."

Instead, he says Gonzalez died in his arms.

Police say a fight sparked the shooting and the gunman took off running. Police accuse Ridgeway of pulling out a knife during it all.

But what exactly led up to the shooting? Ridgeway refuses to answer. He did open up about his bond with Gonzalez.

Ridgeway: "He might not have meant nothing to them, but he was my everything. Do you know what it's like to lose your everything? To have your heart -- he was my heart -- and he slipped away right through my fingers."

Lemor: "So why are you in here?"

Ridgeway: "I don't know. I can't speculate on that, m'am. I tried to help him and there was nothing I could do. He was fighting to stay alive and I was fighting to keep him alive. There's nothing I could do."

He says he does not know the shooter, but police say he does. Ridgeway is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
