Ranking The NBA Logos: Kings Could Upgrade
Zach Lowe of Grantland released his ranking for best logos across the NBA Monday, leaving Sacramento in the dust in terms of their look.
Out of the 30 teams, the Sacramento Kings were placed 24th for their classic crown and crossed swords (or lances?) first used in the 1994-95 season.
Here is what Lowe had to say about the current Kings logo:
"You almost have to squint at this mess for 30 seconds, like one of those Magic Eye puzzles, to figure out what the hell is going on. There are swords, maybe some crown-like spikes at the top, and, wait, is there a shield in there someplace? It resembles a prop from a bad tiki bar.
"It looks like you walked into someone's kitchen, took out a big magnet, sucked all the pots and pans toward it, and then concluded, 'There's your logo,'" Fox says. The "K" and "S" in "Kings" are weirdly larger than the middle three letters.
The purple-and-black combination is nice, and unique in the NBA, but there's not quite enough black here. There is entirely too much gray.
The Kings need something cleaner, and they have good starting points in the vault. Their current secondary logo, a purple crown, is pleasing, and the crown atop a yin-yanged "S" and "K" could lead them someplace special."
While he has a point about the over-use of gray, we still think the logo deserves a little higher. There's no denying the retro logos the Kings used before the current one are some of the best in the history of the league, but they can for sure upgrade based off those two alternate logos.
Click here to view the rest of the rankings, but I'll have to pick a couple out that were severely overrated in this case. The Portland Trailblazers is so outdated, I would put it behind the Kings. Same with the Los Angeles Lakers. We get it, your team has won a lot in the past. But having the same logo for five decades make all those winning teams blend together.
A logo should represent an team's era. Some logos grow stale or outdated. Some are classic and need no renovating (i.e. Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics).
