Rocklin Soccer Fireworks Show That Started Fires Raises Concerns In Drought

By Kelly Ryan

ROCKLIN (CBS13) — A fireworks show in Rocklin over the weekend sparked several fires, with one burning close to homes, leaving residents wondering why the show was approved in an extreme drought.

It was a celebration to usher in a new soccer season, but when winds picked up, those fireworks started fires, including one where residents had to quickly jump into action.

"I was kind of thinking what the heck are they doing," said Bill Iwan.

He could see the fireworks from his home a couple of blocks from the soccer field at Margaret Azevedo Park. The show was put on by Rocklin Youth Soccer Club. They hired Pyro Spectaculars, a company which has done shows for the Olympics and the Super Bowl.

A wind shift sent fireworks onto dry grassy areas behind William Jessup University sparking three spot fires, then a larger fire broke behind nearby homes.

"Several people around us called 911 try to get fired department out here," said Lisa Webster.

She says there were big flames not far from her backyard. Her husband and neighbors jumped into action.

"The guys were back there with shovels trying to put it out until the fire department got here," she said.

The Rocklin Fire Department says a permit was granted because they had completed thorough fire-protective measures like weeding and putting in fire breaks. They say there was a fire truck on standby across from the park and two more ready if needed.

Still in light of the situation the fire department says it understand residents concerns.

The fire department doesn't blame the pyrotechnics company, and they say if the drought continues the department itself will re-evaluate permits for fireworks shows.

There was no property damage from the fires that were put out before they reached homes.
