Stockton Coffee Company Expanding Its Options With New Name

STOCKTON (CBS13) — From K cups to French presses at home to big-name chains and local roasters, there are plenty of ways to get a caffeine fix.

So how does a small coffee business stand out in the crowd.

Jesus Mountain Coffee has been grinding beans in this Stockton alley for three years. The owner says she didn't find her customers, they found her through social media.

The idea came from the beans. When Bing Kirk bought property in Nicaragua, his land was perfect for coffee beans and he needed a hobby. He asked his stepdaughter to move back to Stockton from New York City to run a new business, and she gave it a shot.

It's now the only coffee company in Stockton that roasts on site. But they knew they had to do more than brew a good cup of coffee.

"When I first moved back, the first thing I did was take over our Instagram and Facebook and just started posting about what we're doing in the shop," said Gianna Vicari.

Kirk discovered the best way to ensure the same quality of coffee was to add a new partner—a computer program.

"It tracks my environmental temperature, my mean temperature, and it creates graphs. So, I roast watching the data," he said.

Coffee drinkers took steps and took notice, but even the regulars say when they need caffeine, there are no loyalties.

"If I need coffee, I will go to Starbucks, also," said Amy Barackman

Vicari says the company needs to reinvent itself every season.

"I will have a homemade pumpkin spice syrup ready in October," she said. "By Thursday, I'm definitely going to have one. I'm trying to push our cold brew on draft in different bars and restaurants. But that's what keeps it interesting."

The company will be changing its name starting on Thursday, going by Trail Coffee Roasters. It will expand to include beans from more than just Jesus Mountain in Nicaragua.
