Cheerios Recall Centered At Lodi Plant Raises Worries Among Those With Wheat Allergies

LODI (CBS13) — A major recall centered on a Lodi plant is creating concern as nearly 2 million boxes of Cheerios have been recalled.

The boxes are marked as gluten-free, but could contain wheat, which would be dangerous for people with wheat allergies and celiac disease.

"If you have symptoms and you know that wheat bothers you, you should avoid it," said Dr. Sunil Perera.

The food allergy specialist in Sacramento says people with gluten intolerance can suffer from illness or discomfort, such as hives or vomiting. For those suffering from celiac disease, it could be more severe, from depression to loss of bone density over time.

General Mills Vice President Jim Murphy released a statement saying, "I am embarrassed and truly sorry to announce today that we are recalling boxes of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios produced on several dates at our Lodi, California facility."

There have been two reports of illness so far.

Melanie Weir, who owns a gluten-free specialty store in Sacramento, says she investigates her vendors thoroughly to reduce the risk of gluten contamination on her shelves.

"I think it's very important that if you have a food allergy or celiac disease to have a relationship with the people who are producing your food," she said. "These kinds of things can be hidden in the manufacturing facility. It's important for us to know that that's a problem."
