College Football Weekly Q&A: Focus On Points

This week's Q & A is with Randy Cross a college football analyst for the CBS Sports Network and a part of Inside College Football seen Tuesdays on the CBS Sports Network.

Q: The recent trend in college football is points, points, points.  Lots of offensives are scoring at record paces, do you think that is a good look for college football?

A: I am not sure that it enhances the image of those conferences when that happens. I think all that offense tends to come at the detriment of the conference in how they are thought of. I think that is one of the reasons last year you saw the Big 12 not get included in the playoffs, besides not having a championship game, it's perceived that they just don't play defense.

Q: Is there a legitimate concern that the college game with their offensive styles, do not prepare quarterbacks for the NFL?

A: I don't personally view that as college football's job. I think it's a concern for NFL teams if they are looking for ready built guys. The spread offense is also something that we are seeing become more prevalent at the NFL level, with the concepts and the things they do with the 4 wides and empty backfields. So the NFL has to be careful for what it wants because they create some of what it wants too

Q: Leonard Fournette is killing it at LSU but is an underclassmen that seams NFL ready, but can't go pro yet.  Should the NFL and NCAA revisit that?

A: I think it's more of a complement to Leonard Fournette, you talk about his style, he is being compared to Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson and those kind of dominant players because right now he is that good. He is going to be over 1,000 yards this week in his 5th game, that is the kind of pace that he is on. I think he is good enough to talk about it, I really honestly think they should give the guy a choice. You can either think about being a pro or at least stay for 3 years and try to get a semblance of an education.

Thank you to Randy Cross for helping out this week, and as always, enjoy the games.
