Man Allegedly Lures Sacramento Police Officer From Car, Viciously Attacks Him

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A police officer is recovering after being viciously attacked while on duty in South Sacramento.

On Monday around 12:30 a.m. the uniformed officer was sitting his patrol car in the 6600 block of Bruceville Road when the suspect, 21-year-old Juan Gomez, walked up and told the officer a man with a gun was in the area.

When the officer got out of the car, Gomez allegedly hit the officer in the face and knocked him to the ground. Gomez then allegedly hit the officer in the face several more times and tried to take his gun.

The officer call for help on his radio and was assisted by security guards in the area. He was treated at a medical facility for "significant facial injuries" and released to recover at home.

Gomez was later arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Jail on multiple charges, which include: resisting arrest, assault, and battery on a police officer.

Police say his reasons for allegedly attacking the officer are not clear.

"This attack not only put the officer's life in jeopardy but endangered the community as well. The officer showed tremendous courage and restraint in surviving this dangerous situation."
