Brew Bike Law Opens New Avenues For Vendors, But Cities Still Have To Weigh In

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — It was a day Jason Blessinger, co-owner of Off The Chain Bike Bus tours had worked hard to see.

Over the weekend, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill on his megacycle aimed at regulating and allowing the serving of alcohol on bike buses.

"When people see it, they understand it," he said.

Operating now as transportation during pub crawls, the tap on board is ready. But even with the governor's signature, it's not ready to start flowing.

"We always have a little ways to go, and it seems as a business and it seems like it's ever changing," he said.

The bill is written to allow cities the choice whether they will allow the cycles to serve alcohol or operate at all.

While the bill sets certain safety requirements, cities will decide where they can operate and how.

The state law will require the company not sell the alcohol, but a third party can provide the booze. But that's not until the city gives the green light.

The state law goes into effect on Jan. 1, but it's not clear how long cities will take to form regulations on bike buses.
