Religious Slurs Found Scratched Into Cars At UC Davis

DAVIS (CBS13) – Police at UC Davis are investigating a hate crime incident after a man vandalized nearly a dozen cars on campus.

The incident happened early Saturday morning at The Colleges at LaRue parking lot. UC Davis Police say a total of eleven cars were found vandalized. Eight tires were found slashed and five of the cars looked to have been keyed with religious slurs.

UC Davis officials say they are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

A suspect was seen running through the apartment complex. He is described by police as a man in his mid-20s of average height and weight and was wearing a black hoodie, black pants and had a messenger-style bag.

Chancellor Linda Katehi released a statement Saturday afternoon condemning the act.

"I am deeply troubled and disappointed that the campus community has experienced another incident that included damaged property and, even more grievously, offensive and disparaging slurs. This is conduct most unbecoming and completely against our Principles of Community," Katehi said.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and ask anyone with more information to call them at (530) 754-2677.
