Suspect Shot And Killed On Busy Carmichael Street After Brief Pursuit

By Kelly Ryan

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies say they were forced to open fire on a suspect after a short pursuit in Carmichael on Thursday.

No deputies were injured in the shooting at Cypress and Garfield avenues in Carmichael.

Adrian Berry was visiting his mom in Carmichael, when just before noon they heard what sounded like shots fired.

"There's construction and my mom said that's construction and I said I don't think so I opened up the garage and saw all these cops there," he said.

In front of his mom's house was the end of a chase and deadly shootout that begin with a deputy trying to make a traffic stop.

According to the Sacramento County sheriff, the driver being pulled over took off, but then after a short chase the car stopped and a passenger got out and surrendered. Then the driver took off a second time.

Eventually the driver came to a stop near the busy intersection of Cyprus and Garfield.

"He immediately got out of his car with a gun in his hand went to the trunk to use it as cover and started shooting at officers," Sheriff Scott Jones said.

The officers returned fire and the suspect dropped, his gun falling a short distance away.

"That subject started crawling quickly towards the weapon still sensing a threat the officers again open fired," he said.

Deputies found a second handgun on the suspect in a pants pocket.

The suspect is described at a 36 year old man with an extensive criminal history going back 20 years with time spent in prison. The man who initially got out of the car is now in custody where officers will try to get some answers.
