Woman Killed In Crash With School Bus In Smartsville

SMARTSVILLE (CBS13) — A woman is dead and her 9-year-old daughter is fighting for her life after their pickup crashed into a school bus.

The crash happened just after 3:30 p.m on Thursday in the town of Smartsville.

The California Highway Patrol says the bus was traveling north on Chuck Yeager Road when a truck driving southbound crossed the double-yellow line into the path of the school bus.

The bus wasn't able to get out of the way and collided with the truck, killing the woman instantly. The 9-year-old girl was life-flighted to UC Davis.

The CHP says windy roads could have played a part, but it's too early in the investigation to tell.

"It's not that heavily travelled, you know it's the lower foothills, it's a windy road. I don't want to say it's a dangerous road but you have to pay attention to the kinds of curves we have up here," siad Sgt. Brian Spiess.

Around 20 students were on board the school bus at the time. Three of them had minor injuries and were treated at the hospital.
