Grant High School Students Mourn Football Player Gunned Down Hours Before Playoff Game

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A Grant Union High School football player was shot and killed and another was wounded hours before the team was set to take part in a playoff game.

What was supposed to be a fun playoff game turned into a tragedy. Though the shooting happened off campus, students say the school will never be the same.

Instead of Friday night football lights, they now stand before a candlelight vigil mourning the loss of one of their varsity football players.

Five Grant High football players had just gotten a bite to eat and were headed back to campus for a pregame meeting. About a mile from campus, around Silver Eagle Road and Mabel Street, they were shot at.

Sacramento Police say it's unknown who the gunman is, or whether the shots came from on foot or inside a vehicle.

The students drove themselves to the school where the two players who got shot got immediate medical help.

While police are not confirming the name of the player killed, friends close to Jaulon "JJ" Clavo are remembering him as a good person.  Coach Mike Alberghini says there will be a meeting with Parents at 10 AM at the school this morning and grief councilors will be on hand.

Saturday, officials announced that the game between Beyer and Grant Union High School has been rescheduled for Monday at 5 p.m.
