Chris Hemsworth Shares Shocking Weight-Loss Photo On Instagram

Hollywood, CA (CBS Sacramento)-- Fans were in shock after Chris Hemsworth posted a shirtless picture on Instagram, which showed how much weight he's lost for his role in the new film "In the Heart of the Sea."

Hemsworth will be starring in Ron Howard's action-adventure movie inspired by Herman Melville's Moby Dick. The book is about a New England whaling ship that was attacked by a whale, prompting the  crew to do everything to stay alive while they went through storms, starvation and many more setbacks.

Hemsworth will be playing first mate "Owen Chase" and told ET during an interview that he had to lose a good amount of weight for the role.

"We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to five, six, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks and it's going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we'll be together in our misery. I spend more time thinking about food than anything else at the moment."

Dr. Travis Stork from "The Doctors" show last month talked about the risks of yo-yo dieting for certain roles saying, "When you're putting on all that quote unquote 'fat weight' around your gut, that's biochemically active and it puts you at risk for a lot of things. The biggest is increased heart rate and increased blood pressure."

In addition to losing weight, Stork mentioned, "In general with that rapid weight loss, you can get malnutrition — certainly if you're not getting enough protein — and even put you at risk for gallstones, which certainly anyone who's had them knows that's no fun."

"In the Heart of the Sea" will hit theaters on Dec. 11.
