Roommate Prank Prompts 911 Call

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The call to the Sacramento police came in as a home break-in, but the caller found out she was only the victim of a prank by her roommate.

It was a prank that worked too well and now has the two roommates smiling together.

It may have been a practical joke inside this home, but it got serious fast, leading to a 911 call and cops with K-9s coming to the rescue.

"I never in a million years thought she would have called the police," said Brittney Cufaude, the roommate behind the practical joke.

Brittney and Erin are friends, roommates and a now a duo with a hilarious whodunit.

"The irony of this whole thing is I had just literally watched a COPS marathon all day long," said Erin O'Hagain, the roommate targeted by the joke.

"I thought it would be an ah! and just be over, but it turned out quite differently," said Brittney.

Brittney set up the prank leaving a masked man propped up late at night in their dark home.

"The house was totally pitch black, and I was kind of, you know, rubbing my eyes as I walked through the house," said Erin. "I turned the corner into the kitchen and I see the figure of a man standing there."

The scarecrow left Erin convinced there was a home invasion. She barricaded herself in her bedroom.

And I know I kept repeating, why isn't he chasing me?" she said.

And she called the cops.

Dispatcher: …459 in progress…subject in dark clothes…

They arrived and quickly cracked the case.

Officer: …459 is going to be unfounded, it's a scarecrow in the kitchen…

Dispatcher: …I copy unfounded who was in the kitchen…

Officer: …Just a scarecrow…SAM-2 I copy scarecrow…

"I was crying, she was laughing," said Erin.

They were a pair of roommates with a practical joke and a plot twist no one saw coming.

"She could not stop laughing," said Erin.

"I went out there and I said 'I am so sorry, officers.' All of them, they were standing in a ring outside the house," said Brittney.

Sacramento police have not filed a criminal report in the case and the roommates are not in trouble since Erin did think she was in real trouble.
