Placer County Concealed Weapons Permit Meetings Booked Through August 2016

PLACER COUNTY (CBS13) — Counties are facing backlogs for concealed weapons permits following recent attacks in San Bernardino and Paris.

While some counties seem to be doing better than others, the soonest interview appointment in Placer County is not for nearly nine months.

"People are getting nervous and want that little bit of protection," said resident George Malim.

The mass shooting in San Bernardino County and the Paris attacks continue to instill a need for security that some are seeking to sate by carrying a gun at all times.

"It was backed up till August of next year to actually have your sit down with the sheriff for the CCW," said resident Chris Bodden.

Once you complete an application online, you need to request an in-person interview with a sheriff's deputy. A look at the Placer County Sheriff's website shows the earliest available date is Aug. 30.

"We're trying to get it under control and speed up the process," said Lt. Andrew Scott. "The applications we've received have gone up significantly which pushes the appointments, which causes for a longer wait time for people to be interviewed."

Currently, they don't have the resources with only three deputies doing interviews two days a week.

Meanwhile in Sacramento County, the normal 200 applicants a month have doubled, though they say it's only a two-day wait.

"Our deputies are sometimes doing 30 to 40 interviews a day," he said.

Placer County is adding an extra deputy to help do interviews and they're rolling out a new automated system in about a month to help reduce wait times and make the permit process better for applicants.
