Suspect In Stolen Car Rams CHP Patrol Car, Flees Scene Before Capture In Mobile Home Park

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) — A dramatic scene outside a Sacramento County hotel ended as police confronted a suspected car thief and wound up shooting at him.

Police say they were trying to pull him over when the suspect hit a patrol car and then took off.

The California Highway Patrol says an officer fired one shot when the suspect almost ran him and another officer over. The suspect initially escaped, and an hour-long manhunt began in the neighborhood just before noon.

"Upon trying to contact that suspect, the suspect put the stolen vehicle into reverse at a high rate of speed and attempted to hit our officers," said officer Jenna Berry. "The officers definitely feared for their lives. When you've got a vehicle coming at you at a high rate of speed and you know that it's already a wanted vehicle, yeah, obviously."

The suspect drove to a gas station across the street before ditching the vehicle and running into a neighborhood south of Madison Avenue.

Motel guests at the La Quinta Inn where it all started were forced to wait outside as suspects searched for persons of interest who may have been with the suspect. One person was put in handcuffs at the In-N-Out Burger.

Eventually officers arrested the suspect at a mobile home park.
