Man Accused Of Stealing CHP Vehicle, Crashing On Highway 50 In Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - CHP investigators are looking into exactly how a reckless-driving suspect managed to steal a patrol SUV near Davis.

At 8:45p.m. Sunday, CHP officers from the Solano division stopped a man who was reportedly driving recklessly on eastbound Interstate 80, just east of Chiles Road. Since it was out of their jurisdiction, officers asked that officers assigned to the Woodland division come to the scene and arrest the man, said Officer Guillermo Garcia from the CHP Valley Division office.

Officers put the man in the back of a patrol vehicle. At this point, it's unclear whether the man was handcuffed when he crawled into the front seat and drove off.

Fearing for his life, a Woodland CHP officer reportedly shot several rounds at the vehicle as it drove away. No one was injured during the incident.

The suspect made it as far as Highway 50 near 15th street where he rammed into several units from the South Sacramento CHP division and finally was taken into custody.

The man was taken to a local hospital to be checked out for injuries and was later booked into jail on unspecified charges.
The CHP is expected to release further information after their investigation concludes.
