Sacramento County Deputy Surprises Family With Christmas They Wouldn't Have Otherwise

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A deputy with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department helped bring Christmas to a single mom and her three children.

Anthony Jenkins first met the Johnson family after responding to a disturbance call at the home on Sunday, when apparently one of the daughters was acting up. When he and his partner arrived, Jenkins soon realized that the family was in dire need of basic essentials and some holiday cheer.

For Kamisha Johnson, it's the first year she couldn't provide Christmas for her kids. She's a single mom of three—two beautiful little girls and one handsome 11-year-old boy.

"I never met an officer, that went beyond the line of duty, and he did," she said.

The children were glued to the Christmas tree and the fun toys underneath it, all made possible by the sheriff's deputies.

Jenkins, a 20-year veteran of the sheriff's department, met the family by chance and after speaking to the kids realized they were hungry.

"Mom was providing a small amount of food, but they wanted regular breakfast items to eat," he said.

Compelled to help, he took it upon himself to buy them groceries. But that wasn't the only thing the family was missing. They had recently moved into the apartment and had no furniture, just a TV.

"Talking to the children they didn't have beds to sleep on, they were sleeping on the floor, either taking a jacket and laying it down on the floor and sleeping for the night," he said.

And so Jenkins decided to recruit some of Santa's elves to help.

"All children should have toys on christmas; all kids should have a Christmas tree and a meal," said Sgt. Cary Trzcinski with the Youth Service Department. "I called them and they jumped on it, they didn't hesitate, gave us a bag full of toys and a mattress for the family."

And the deliveries began.

"We won't have to sleep on the floor anymore," Johnson's son said.

The tree was donated by Walmart and the deputies helped set it up with the kids.

"They wouldn't leave the tree alone, wouldn't leave the gifts alone, kept picking at it, poking at it, laughs," she said.

Now the Johnson family home is just a little more bright this year.

"They're gonna have a blessed Christmas, thanks to the officer," Johnson said.

She recently got a new job that should help the family out.

Jenkins says he was so humble and didn't want the attention. he just saw a family in need and wanted to help.
