Portions Of SB I-5 In Sacramento Closing Temporarily On Tuesday

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A stretch of Interstate 5 in Sacramento, which has proven to be dangerous in recent weeks, will be shut down once again. Not because of a deadly accident, but to prevent another one.

A CHP investigation in South Sacramento could impact your morning commute.

Caltrans is temporarily closing lanes on southbound Interstation 5 today near Seamas Avenue for skid testing, which examines how long it takes vehicles to stop under different conditions.

The right two lanes will be closed from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the fast lane will be closed from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Caltrans urges drivers to find alternate routes or expect delays.

On December 10, a driver died when an overturned semi landed on his truck along this same stretch of the road. In that crash, a Fedex driver lost control near the Seamas Road exit, killing a 45-year-old Elk Grove man.

On December 21, an overturned semi just south of the Sutterville Road exit closed part of the freeway for about five hours. The driver lost control, sending the cab over the divider and scattering debris across the road. While crews worked to move that wreckage, another semi collided with a car along northbound Interstate 5, just a few miles to the south, near the Florin Road exit.

The CHP has not determined if slick conditions were the cause of any of these crashes, but told CBS13 this is a common area for semi trucks to lose control.
