Pedestrian Trying To Cross I-80 Near Fairfield Struck, Killed By Big Rig

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) - A 33-year-old San Francisco-area man is dead after being struck by a big-rig nearly seven hours into the new year.

California Highway Patrol officials say dispatch started receiving calls around 6:25 a.m. Friday of a man acting oddly along an interstate highway.

Authorities say the man had left his disabled vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 80. He was trying to cross traffic lanes when a tractor-trailer struck him around 6:41 a.m.

He died immediately.

CHP spokesman Dave Harvey says drugs or alcohol may have been involved.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was from Daly City, California, south of San Francisco

The driver of the truck, a 51-year-old man from Reno, Nevada, was not cited.

Fairfield is about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco.
