Work On Dangerous Stretch Of I-5 In Sacramento To Impact Traffic

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Drivers on Interstate 5 should expect delays between Sunday night at Tuesday morning as Caltrans crews work to make a dangerous stretch of freeway through Sacramento safer.

Between 9 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday, Caltrans will use diamond cutters to rough up the surface of a 250-foot section of southbound Interstate 5 at Seamas Avenue. The Seamas Avenue exit will be closed during the work. Crews will do the same thing starting 9 p.m. Monday night in the northbound lanes, with work wrapping up at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The work comes after Caltrans road tests revealed traction in that stretch of freeway had worn down over time, causing the big rigs to skid. Two separate crashes in December resulted in the closure the freeway for hours, and one killed a driver.

Seth Clark, a man who lives near the stretch, says he welcomes the repair work.

"The truck went through the median, so if it can go through a median, I don't see why it couldn't go through the right side over the overpass," said Clark. "So that is pretty scary."

Rain is expected to arrive in our area early this week and could slow work on the road.
