Lead Contractor Pulls Out Of Across The Top Freeway Project

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Rancho Cordova-based Construction contractor C.C. Myers, Inc. has pulled out of the Interstate 80 Across The Top project, a Caltrans spokesperson has confirmed.

The company will no longer work on the project, citing financial difficulties, according to Caltrans spokesman Dennis Keaton. He says the project was a joint project between C.C. Myers and Concord-based Bay Area Cities Paving and Grading. Bay Area Cities Paving and Grading will continue the work, and is expected to finish on schedule.

The Across The Top project is one of the biggest highway projects ever in the Sacramento area and has turned into one of the biggest headaches for commuters.

The project covers a 10-mile stretch from the Sacramento River bridge eastbound to Watt Avenue in Sacramento County. Work has been underway since 2011 to repave the highway and add carpool and auxiliary lanes.

In April 2014, two miles of freshly laid concrete along Interstate 80 had to be torn up and redone. Caltrans inspectors called it unsound concrete and made the contractor re-do the work at a cost of $2-3 million.

Caltrans inspectors say, at this point, there is nothing to suggest the work done by C.C. Myers was done poorly.
