Stockton Airport Aims To Go International, Attract Los Angeles Flight Traffic

STOCKTON (CBS13) — The Stockton Metropolitan Airport is seeing more flights and has big plans to expand after a nearly $10 million bond from the county.

Starting in April, flights will be offered between Stockton and San Diego. The airport is also expecting private planes coming in for Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7.

San Joaquin County has set its sights high for the airport, granting it a $9.7 million bond.

The main project is building a federal inspection station for customs, allowing the airport to accept flights from Mexico as an international airport.

"It'll take a year to build the facility. We're in design now," said director Harry Mavrogenes.

Allegiant recently announced new flights to San Diego from Stockton starting in the spring.

The county bond comes from Measure K, a tax slated for transportation projects. The airport is responsible for just the interest.

Across the airport, a cargo company is getting ready to start work next week, flying out seven days a week.

The airport is also working on wooing a new partner—Los Angeles International Airport.

"LAX would be big, because it would give us the opportunity to hook up with what's called a hub airport," he said.
