Call Kurtis: Options for Marinello Beauty Students After School Abruptly Closes

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — When Alina Hull showed up to take a test at Marinello Schools of Beauty this morning, she says she was turned away. Instead, she packed up her things and said goodbye.

"I wanted to cry, she said. "But held it in."

The California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education said it was informed that all 45 California campuses of Marinello Colleges of Beauty are closing. It comes days after the Federal Department of Education announced it was cutting the school's financial aid funding. An investigation found the school deceived both the Government's Financial Aid program and its own students.  The State of California determined the school did not meet minimum operating standards and issued an emergency order last week for the school to stop enrolling new students as of today.

Hull said she was half way through the program and was set to graduate in July.

"I wonder if they're going to give us forgiveness," Hull said referring to the $22,000 in federal student aid she received.

According to the state, students can request refunds from the school, or apply to have their federal loans discharged.  There is also a fund they can tap into called the Student Tuition Recovery Fund.

Students can also try and transfer their credits. The Federico Beauty Institute tells CBS13 it will honor hours and waive certain registration fees as noted in this graphic.

The Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education says it will have staff members on campus next week on Wednesday and Thursday to help students in person.

Marinello students can also refer to the Bureau's Closed School Guide.

"We are hoping to make the transition in Marinello students' education as smooth as possible during this difficult time," the agency said in a message on its website.
