Woman Hit With Baseball Bat In Robbery Outside Of Fairfield Mall Dies

FAIRFIELD (CBS13) - Police say the woman who was violently attacked and robbed in the Solano Town Center parking lot has died from her injuries.

Cheryl Ann Sherwood, a 63-year-old Suisun City resident, was walking to her car late Wednesday morning when someone came up from behind and hit her in the head with a baseball bat.

The suspect took her purse and then ran.

Investigators say the attack was brazen, random crime of opportunity.

"While it is almost impossible to prevent this type of random act of violence, we will be increasing patrols of the area in and around the Solano Town Center in an effort to deter criminal activity," Fairfield Police stated in a press release.

Officers tracked the suspect - identified as 19-year-old William David King - and arrested him in Vallejo. Sherwood's purse was found with King when he was pulled over, police say.

Sherwood was rushed to the hospital after the attack. Friday, Fairfield Police announced that she had died.

King will now be facing a charge of homicide in addition to his other charges.

Kaiser Permanente released the following statement on Sherwood's death:

We are saddened by death of our employee, and our sympathies are with her family and friends at this time. We are also providing support to Kaiser Permanente co-workers who may be affected by this loss.
