Elk Grove School District Excited At Large Turnout Of Potential Substitute Teachers

ELK GROVE (CBS13) — The Elk Grove Unified School District put out the call for substitute teachers and got a big response from many first-time teachers.

In just two months, Associate Superintendent for Human Resources David Reily says the call for more subs hasn't fallen on deaf ears.

"That was even more successful than we had anticipated," he said. "As a result, we have 111 new substitutes in our system who are at work as we speak."

Last fall, the district turned to parents and other locals for help in the classroom, including people with degrees going unused and people waiting to be trained.

Spokeswoman Xanthi Pinkerton echoed Reily's pleasure at the turnout.

"The strategy of reaching out to our parent community definitely was phenomenal," he said.

Now training sessions on teaching standards and best practices are underway, but Thursday is only the beginning.

"We want to whet their appetite for wanting to come to future trainings," Pinkerton said.
