Candlelight Vigil Remembers Sacramento Marine Killed In Suspected DUI Crash
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A candlelight vigil was held on Friday for a 25-year-old Marine who was killed in a car crash.
Brett Jones died on Thursday morning on a Highway 50 onramp after the car he was riding in crashed into the back of a big rig.
He was known for his sense of humor, confidence and his unshakable loyalty.
"He was a man that served his country never turned his back on anyone and despite the situation he was in he was there for people."
Born in Sacramento, Jones was also known as 2Ts was a Marine who was deployed in Afghanistan in 2011 and who was still active.
The brothers that served beside him held candles on Friday night honoring his memory.
"He just that guy that everyone wanted to know."
Wearing his late brother's high-school letterman jacket and favorite gym tank top, Brett's younger brother Markus tries to hold it together for the family.
"We're all shaky, can't believe it, in denial he's gone—but he will live on through everyone here."
Jones was also a student at Sacramento state studying criminology. His fraternity brothers were also there to remember him.
His life was cut short early Thursday morning after he got into a car with fellow Sacramento State student 22-year-old Alexandra Jimenez at the wheel.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a big rig was getting onto Highway 50 when Jimenez's Toyota Scion traveling at an unknown speed apparently veered into the lane and slammed into the back of the truck.
The CHP says Jimenez had too much to drink and Jones wasn't wearing his seat belt. She was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. She was released from the hospital on Friday and booked on those charges
The community is helping raise money for the family for funeral costs.
