Davis Nightclub At Center Of Deadly Stabbing Has Alcohol License Suspended

DAVIS (CBS13) — A popular Davis bar had its alcohol license suspended months after a young man was stabbed to death during a bar fight.

Officials say police reported to the bar dozens of times even before the stabbing and call the suspension a slap on the wrist.

Ket-Mo-Ree in Davis is still a popular place for Thai food, but the town hasn't forgotten about the bar fight that took the live of a young man celebrating his birthday.

"I told my girls I'm going to Ket-Mo-Ree, gonna meet some friends for dinner and they're like, 'Oh yeah, we've heard about that,'" said Geneva Foncannon.

The suspension means the restaurant can't serve alcohol for 30 days, and it will face a two-year probationary period where violations could cost the restaurant's business license.

The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control accuses Ket-Mo-Ree of being a "disorderly house" with a long list of violations. Between 2014 and 2015, it says Davis Police responded to disturbances including public intoxication, fights and assaults.

Mayor Dan Wolk says the City Council recently extended a moratorium on new bars in Davis and will soon vote on an entertainment permit ordinance requiring nightclubs to follow conditions from hiring security to enacting soft closures—meaning the bar may close at 2 a.m., but people will stop being let in at 1 a.m.

"I think it was the final straw that woke the community up and said hey we have an issue in our downtown something about it," he said.
