Police: Driver In Deadly Davis Crash Was Speeding, Intoxicated

DAVIS (CBS13) — A 32-year-old man has been arrested in a suspected DUI crash that claimed the life of a 71-year-old woman.

Steven Hendrix is behind bars as Davis Police investigate the crash on Second Street in Davis.

"The information we have is that he was driving at an extremely high rate of speed and he was driving very erratically," said Davis Police Lt. Tom Waltz.

Cynthia Jonasen, 71, was coming from the opposite direction. As she turned east from Cantill to Second, Hendrix's car slammed into hers.

Waltz says Hendrix wasn't alone in the car.

"There were four juveniles and two adults that were also with Mr. Hendrix. All of them were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries," he said.

Jonasen died from her injuries in the crash.

Hendrix was treated for his injuries and arrested on Wednesday night. He could face vehicular manslaughter, DUI resulting in death, and child endangerment charges.

Investigators are also seeking the driver of a gray sedan that Hendrix may have passed before colliding with Jonasen's vehicle.
