Calaveras County Road Crews Racing To Fix Muddied Roads Before Next Storms Roll In
CALAVERAS COUNTY (CBS13) — The race is on to fix roads muddied from last weekend's storm before the next round of rain hits on Thursday.
Calaveras County road crews are working around the clock to fix flood-damaged roads before the next storm makes things worse. They appeared to be digging a moat through Mountain Ranch Road, but it was the only way to stop the flooding.
"Forty-eight-inch culvert gave way, collapsed underneath Mountain Ranch Road. It's a pipe underneath the roadway that carries the drainage," said road superintendent Scott Anderson.
Residents have to take a long detour.
Homeowner Stan Reif is perhaps one of the most grateful for the crews' hard work.
"Right now we're living in the 5th wheel here. Our house was on the top of the hill. The clean up crews in my opinion, bent over backwards to help us," he said.
Reif already started rebuilding with the help of cleanup crews quickly clearing his land. He says the heavy rains shouldn't be a problem for his family and his animals. They're staying on high ground.
But his neighbors on Mountain Ranch Road are dealing with the mud flows.
"Some of the pipes on Mountain Ranch Road were put in 60 to 70 years ago," Anderson said.
Road crews are racing to replace a lot of the drainage pipes clogged, or those in danger of collapsing before the next storm.
