Pavelski Scores In OT And Sharks Edge Flames 2-1
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Martin Jones kept the San Jose Sharks rolling on the road.
Jones made a career-high 47 saves and Joe Pavelski scored 19 seconds into overtime and the Sharks beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 Monday night.
"He was on. He was reading all the plays. You could see him anticipating everything. It was just one of those performances," Pavelski said of Jones.
Brent Burns curled toward the net and centered a pass that Pavelski one-timed past Joni Ortio.
Burns had the other goal for San Jose, which has won four of five and improved its league-best road record to 24-9-3.
Joe Colborne tied the game for Calgary with 1:22 left in the third period. On their sixth power play and with Ortio on the bench for an extra attacker, Mark Giordano gloved down a clearing attempt by Nick Spaling and from the blue line and wristed a shot that Colborne deflected past Jones.
"That might be some of the best power-play zone time and chances that we've had all year. Could have had three or four easily," Colborne said. "Give them credit, sometimes you need a goalie to go out and steal you a game. It was a pretty incredible game by Jonesy."
Calgary has won just one of its past seven at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Flames' 48 shots on goal were their highest in a game since Nov. 18 2008, when they had 51 against Colorado.
Burns opened the scoring 1:56 into the game when he snapped a shot from the blue line that went through a crowd of bodies in front and found the top corner.
It was Burns' 24th goal of the season. He is the first defenseman to reach that total since Washington's Mike Green scored 31 in 2008-09. Burns has seven points (four goals, three assists) in his past four games.
Jones, who made 18 saves in the second period, improved to 33-17-4. He is third in the NHL in wins.
"He was unbelievable, huge save after huge save and he was there for the routine ones. He's been playing amazing," said Burns, who has eight points (four goals, four assists) in his past four games.
Ortio had 21 saves to fall to 1-6-3.
"Coming back with a minute left and then a quick goal in OT, that breaks your heart a little," Ortio said.
The Flames had a chance to tie the game earlier in the third period when Colborne set up Lance Bouma at the side of the net. But with Jones caught out of position, Bouma shot the puck right through the crease and out the other side.
"I'm very proud of our team," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "We're a young team and sometimes it doesn't always go our way, but the one thing that we have to respect from our team is the effort.
"The commitment to leave everything on the ice, to play with energy, to play with passion and we're getting this and that's step one in the right direction."
