CHP Remembers Nathan Taylor After Fatal Interstate 80 Crash

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The California Highway Patrol remembered an officer who was killed in the line of duty on Saturday.

A bell tolled for the end of 35-year-old Nathan Daniel Taylor's watch. Taylor died from injuries he suffered after being struck by an SUV while directing traffic in a snowstorm on Saturday.

"We'll get through this. This is a tragic loss for all of us," said CHP Commissioner Joseph Farrow.

Surrounding the courtyard of the CHP academy were hundreds of fellow officers and supportive staff for the solemn ceremony.

"Nathan Taylor; I'm not sure they come any better," Farrow said.

The married father of three had surgery after he was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 80. He died Sunday night from those injuries. He was just wrapping up work from a prior accident when he was hit.

"He was out there doing what he loved and that's providing safety and security for the people of California," said his commander, Lt. Dave Jenkins. "We're going to rely on each other. Support for each other. But please know we need the support of the community."

Nathan Taylor's family is still in the process of planning his funeral service.
