Sacramento State Students Spending Spring Break Trying To Get Out The Vote

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A group of Sacramento State students are adding some extra substance to spring break through politics.

More than 100 students are spending the week knocking on more than 1,600 doors to get out the vote for the 2016 election.

From sidewalks and stairs, to navigating around gates and even a few barking dogs, Sacramento State students are targeting neighborhoods with traditionally low voter turnout to try and change that.

The work is far from easy, but it emphasizes service over spirits surrounding the spring break trips of many of their peers.

"I wanted to help out here because voting is important," said Mary Kate Sarte

The senior is one of more than 100 students opting for an alternative spring break, going door-to-door to boost voter registration for this year's presidential election.

"I feel good," she said. "I feel great with the outcomes we've been having."

Organizers with the Community Engagement Center and Sacramento Area Congregations Together say this doesn't just sharpen students' social and political skills, it provides a much-needed community service.

"This is a critically important election year. As you know, a lot of polarization between the candidates and issues so we want to make sure every voice is heard." said Dana Kivel.
