Police Search For Man Who Assaulted 2 Women At Cosumnes River College

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - After two sexual assaults on Friday, Cosumnes River College police are asking students to stay vigilant and alert.

Friday's incident is part of about a half-dozen attacks on women since October. What are police doing now to keep students safe?

The Los Rios police department says it's trying to make sure students have a sense of security, by having more of a police presence.

"He's still on the loose? That's kind of scary," said Johan Hundel, a student.

Most students we spoke with at Cosumnes River College know about Friday's attacks.

"Seriously, I'm surprised by these incidents," said Hundel.

Officers say, on two separate occasions, a man in his 30's, groped two women as they walked to class Friday. He escaped before police got here.

"The best thing for us to do is try to locate this individual," said Capt. Chris Day, a Los Rios Police Department spokesperson.

Officers say this follows four serious incidents in October when several women were either sexually assaulted or threatened at gunpoint. Officers eventually arrested one suspect for October's assaults.

Police cruisers are very noticeable at the school.

"We're checking video footage. We're increasing our patrols so we're doing everything we can to contact or catch this individual," said Day.

Following Friday's incident, police sent out crime alerts through the student email system and texts to student signed up to receive alerts.

"I honestly hadn't heard anything about it," said student Corinne Casey.

But some students admit they rarely look for those alerts.

"It's a secondary account, so I'm not always checking it," she said.

Investigators say one of their biggest concerns is students buried in smartphones or devices. Hundel admits she's often buried in her books, but says now she's very aware of her surroundings.

"I don't roam around with headphones in my ears all the time. I just stay alert," she said.

Investigators say this latest suspect is described as an African-American male in his 30's with dark braided hair and was wearing dark clothing.
