Residents Say New Overpass Creates Deadly Shortcut From Interstate 5

CLARKSBURG (CBS13) — Residents who live along a narrow road where a driver died on Tuesday morning says people drive way too fast, and say a new shortcut may be to blame.

The deadly-head-on collision about four miles north of Clarksburg claimed the life of a driver in a sedan.

"The conditions on this road are not conducive to speed," said resident Allison Cox.

Residents who live on the quiet and tranquil roadway parallel to the Sacramento River say they're seeing an increase in collisions in their neighborhood.

"We've had about three people crash in front of our house," she said.

Terry and Allison Cox blame the recently constructed Cosumnes River Interstate 5 overpass. It connects South Sacramento to their riverside neighborhood, and they say when I-5 commuters get stuck in traffic, it becomes a shortcut to West Sacramento and Downtown Sacramento.

Until now, they say very few people knew about the road. They say if people don't slow down, more lives will be cut short.

"I fear for the safety of my family, my neighbors," said Terry Cox. "People rolling through its become pretty insane actually."

A pickup driver who was involved in Tuesday's crash was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center with minor injuries.

The Civic driver hasn't been identified.
