Candiates Gearing Up For California Primary Election

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – If you haven't been bombarded by campaign door knocks or calls, get ready. With one month left to register for the California primary, and for the first time in generations California actually matters, it's going to be a fight from all sides.

"It's actually going to matter and it's going to matter greatly," said Karen Bernal with the Sacramento for Bernie Sanders group.

Bernal said they started last September joining forces, but this weekend is the official launch to take on voters.

"I haven't seen the depth and breadth of this kind of excitement over a campaign. It's unchartered territory actually," she said.

Many of the presidential candidates are now gearing up for California, including Hillary Clinton, who announced her leadership team in California. Trump himself sent this robocall: "In order for your vote to count, you must be registered to vote as a Republican."

The call was made to 1 million independent voters -- that's because you must be registered as a Republican to vote for him.

"We're seeing in district after district just huge numbers of Republicans planning to vote," said Tim Clark who is leading the California Campaign for Trump.

Registering as a nonpartisan voter, you can only vote in the Democratic, American Independent and Libertarian primaries, the three parties that have allowed crossover voting.

The Republican, the Green, and Peace and Freedom parties all do not allow non-partisan voters.

That decision affects nearly 1 in 4 voters who have chosen the no party preference option in California.

"This is their chance to determine our nominee," said Clark.

You have one month to register to vote or register for a different party.
