Inmate Stabs Correctional Officer in Fresno County

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a Fresno County jail inmate used a jail-made weapon to stab a correctional officer behind his left ear. The officer suffered minor injuries.

Fresno County Sheriff's Lt. Joe Smith tells the Fresno Bee the officer was conducting a cell check Saturday afternoon when 27-year-old Daniel Telles reached out from his cell and stabbed him.

Smith says the officer was taken to a hospital for treatment but did not need stitches and has returned to work.

He calls Telles "a dangerous inmate" and says he has been moved away from the jail's general population and is pending evaluation.

Authorities say Telles, a known gang member, was arrested in February after he allegedly pointed a handgun at two people in a car and then at police.

Telles is now facing felony assault charges and his bail is set at $595,000, according to jail records.
