Has Donald Trump Changed The Way Presidential Candidates Campaign?

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Donald Trump's campaign has challenged everything experts thought they knew about presidential races.

He's proven his critics wrong with a style that's all his own that's gotten him votes.

"He has changed the rules of the game as it related to presidential politics," said political strategist Doug Elmets.

He initially counted Trump out as a serious candidate, citing an unstatesmanlike style. Now he admits he was wrong.

"He's managed in 140 characters or less on Twitter to carry a message much louder than any other presidential campaign or any other presidential candidate in history," he said.

Trump's most controversial tweets have been labeled divisive by critics, but Trump's support has surged.

UC Davis political science professor Bob Huckfeldt sees something bigger developing.

"There's a theme going on in mass culture today that sort of embraces this kind of behavior, and if it works in mass culture why wouldn't it work in a political campaign?" he said. "That was the principle that got employed, and it turns out he's right."
