Tryouts For SF Giants Wheelchair Softball Team
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The Giants have the River Cats in West Sacramento, so they're now expanding their league with wheelchair softball.
On Sunday, athletes proved they had what it takes to represent orange and black.
"A lot of people have preconceived notions," said coach Rick Mason.
Coach Rick is offering up advice for athletes hoping to make the team.
"The focus is on the sport. It's the same sport, just done in a different way," Mason said.
He says after his injury, he turned to sports and didn't realize the amazing athletes he was up against with a competitive nature.
"Pure athletic ability, first of all. A big thing is desire and attitude, [it] makes a big difference," Mason said.
After a disease left him without use of his legs in 2009, John Spires struggled with depression.
"It was difficult. I had a really hard time, I had some really down times," said Spires, who was out on Sunday trying out for the team.
Spires says sports like this have made all the difference in the world.
"I feel more comfortable around other people in chairs because we all have something in common," Spires said.
Those who make the team will be announced to Giants fans at the game on May 23.
