Ted Cruz Drops Out Of Presidential Race, Clearing Path For Donald Trump

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz is dropping out of the presidential race, clearing the way for Donald Trump to be the party's nominee for the 2016 election.

Cruz made the announcement after losing to Trump in Indiana on Tuesday night. He said he's suspending his campaign, but not his fight for liberty.

In recent days, Cruz had geared his campaign toward the GOP convention in July in Cleveland. He added former opponent Carly Fiorina as a vice presidential candidate. Last week, he and fellow candidate John Kasich reportedly had a plan to deny delegates to Trump in the remaining primaries leading up to the convention.

But word of that arrangement seemed to galvanize Trump's supporters, who resoundingly chose Trump in recent primary elections, including Tuesday's in Indiana, a state where Cruz referred to a basketball hoop as a "ring" and his recently chosen running mate fell after introducing him.

Cruz was the only candidate who had a mathematical chance to challenge Trump's nomination as the Republican part's presidential candidate.

The decision will likely lessen California's impact on the presidential election, as only the Democratic primary is still up for grabs.
